Enhancing Biodiversity

St Mary’s Fields are maintained by a lively group of volunteers meeting monthly, to manage and monitor the woodland and the grassland for the benefit of the wildlife  – including walkers – and invertebrate habitat.

Orchard Park, Exeter Close, Park Hill, and Ron Groves recreation grounds have areas set aside for volunteers to grow their own vegetables in raised beds and recycled containers. In Park Hill, Lyne Road Green and Foxdown Close, and along the green corridors alongside cycle and alleyways through Chorefields the council has initiated a ‘no mow May’ programme, allowing wild flowers and grasses to grow up naturally, to attract more bees and insects. See our current plans to make Lyne Road Green a more attractive, biodiverse and secure setting. See also our page on Kidlington’s Small Greens.

The Council works with the Kidlington Eco Group to promote and enable a wide range of ecological activities.

Open Spaces within Kidington Parish Council

It is increasingly being documented how much of a positive effect spending time outdoors can have on our mental and physical health.   Activities that involve the nurturing of plants, contact with the soil, the reward of growing something edible and sharing these moments with others are especially beneficial.  Gardening together as a group allows us to learn from one another and develop new friendships as we tend a plot together.
The Parish Council are running the Growing Spaces project to build community, promote local food growing, provide for the local wildlife, foster residents’ wellbeing and help manage our green spaces sustainably.
All are made very welcome at our regular sessions, which take place on Monday mornings, Saturday mornings and the occasional summer evening.
